Geology graduate, Imperial College, 1967, also PhD 1970. Chartered Geologist. Lecturer Imperial College from 1969, Reader from 1982. Moved to Manchester University 1989 & established rock deformation laboratory there. Professor, Head of Dept 1996-2001. Emeritus Professor since 2011. Wollaston Fund 1993 and Lyell Medal 1999 (Geol Soc London). Elected Fellow fo the American Geophysical Union 2004, Neel Medal (European Geosciences Union) 2011. Jules Braunstein prize (AAPG) 2015.
Served on UK Research Assessment Panel 2001 and 2008, and on the Shale Gas Task Force chaired by Lord Chris Smith 2015-2017. Chaired Gordon Conference on Rock Deformation 2003, editorial responsibilities on Journal of Geophysical Research, Tectonophysics.
