Dr Laurence Stamford

Laurence is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Chemical Engineering at The University of Manchester. His main interest is the role of new technologies in sustainable development. This involves identifying and quantifying the environmental, economic and social implications of technological systems. By applying life cycle thinking to industrial systems, he considers their upstream and downstream effects, identifying new opportunities, avoiding unintended negative consequences, and prioritising future research and policy. To this end, he uses techniques such as life cycle assessment, social life cycle assessment, life cycle costing, circular economy principles, eco-efficiency and multi-criteria decision analysis. His work is funded primarily by UKRI (EPSRC, NERC) and the EU (H2020).

Laurence's PhD was awarded in 2012 for his work on the sustainability of energy systems. Since then he has been involved in technology development and assessment in the energy sector (nuclear, gas, wind, solar, storage, future scenarios), the food system, materials and bio-processes."
